Worcester, MA – In response to the growing crisis of older adult homelessness in the City of Worcester, Elder Services of Worcester Area, Inc. (ESWA) joined forces with the Worcester Department of Public Health, Southern Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC), Open Sky, and Community Healthlink to launch a transformative series of Older Adult Wellness Outreach events. This collaborative initiative was born from the City of Worcester’s direct concern and vision for a more connected and compassionate approach to supporting unhoused older adults.
With funding provided through a Behavioral Health Outreach for Aging Populations (BHOAP) contract, ESWA and its partners set out to bridge critical gaps in access to food, housing, and behavioral health services for individuals aged 60 and older. The outreach events, held throughout June at the MLK Jr. Center, El Buen Samaritano, Abby’s House, and the Worcester Senior Center, offered a welcoming space for connection, care, and community.
Each attendee received lunch, and a thoughtfully curated wellness backpack filled with items to support both physical and emotional well-being. These included word puzzles, mechanical pencils, socks, stress-relief toys, a toiletry kit, first aid supplies, a $30 laundry card, sunglasses and sunscreen, a worry stone, a medication organizer, and shower shoes.
In addition to these essentials, participants had access to two free optional service stations: a MassHealth Resource Table staffed by SMOC and a Behavioral Health Clinician Table offering one-on-one consultations. These services provided a vital opportunity for attendees to receive personalized support and referrals for ongoing care.
Across all four events, ESWA proudly served 138 older adults, ranging in age from 60 to 94. Among them, 10 individuals were experiencing homelessness and 65 were living alone. The events reflected Worcester’s rich cultural diversity, with attendees identifying as Alaska Native, Albanian, Arabic, Asian, Black or African American, Haitian, Hispanic or Latino, Jamaican, and White. Interpretation services were available in multiple languages, including Albanian, Arabic, English, French, Ghanan, Haitian Creole, Polish, Spanish, Twi, and Vietnamese.
Elder Services of Worcester Area remains steadfast in its mission to uplift and empower older adults through compassionate outreach and strategic partnerships. In alignment with ESWA’s core purpose—to provide eligible individuals with a range of services that enhance their quality of life and allow them to live as independently as possible in dignity and respect— these wellness events exemplify the power of community-driven care. By offering direct support, referrals, and culturally responsive resources, ESWA continues to bridge critical gaps and ensure that every older adult, regardless of housing status, has access to the services and respect they deserve. Together with their partners, ESWA continues to meet the immediate needs of their consumer base, while also building a more inclusive, connected, and resilient Worcester for all older adults.
